Har-ki-Dun, situated at an elevation of 3566
metres is surrounded by glittering peaks and
dense forests. The forests are rich in wild
life and are a veritable paradise for bird-watchers
and nature lovers. Har-ki-Dun,
a relatively small, unspoilt valley very similar
to |
|
|
|
|
the Valley of Flowers, is 8 km. froom Osla
the last village in the region. To some trekkers
it is a preferable destination as it involves
more of a trek, is not so often visited, and is
not yet commercialised. From Har ki Dun it is
possible to climb many named and un-named
peaks and to cross over the ridge to Yamunotri.
|
| Of
the named peaks, Swargarohini is of special
interest. According to legends, the
Pandawas,
Draupadi ( their common wife) and their
Dog climbed the mountain when they left
the earth. Swargarohini means " The
Path of Heaven". The
roadhead to Har-Ki-Dun is at Naitwar.
From here a 12 km. gradual ascent is
Saur.
From here the Taluka is 11 km also a gradual
ascent.Near Osla is a forest rest house,
11 km. again a gradual ascent. The village
of Osla is across the river but it is
well worth the trip to visit the intricately
carved wooden temple. From this Forest
Rest House to the one at Har-ki-Dun it
is 8 km. of steep climbing. Further up
the Ruinsara Gad is a lake and one of
the base camps for climbing Swargarohini. |
