Trekking in Garhwal Himalaya Region

The beauty of Garhwal hills is picture perfect, a fusion of high mountain valley and lakes of many streams and among India's greatest rivers.Comprising the districts of the Garhwal hills are a veritable paradise for trekkers. Nature is in her element here, and trekking trails are renowned for the great beauty of their views, stunningly different at almost every turn. But there is plenty of interest here for the amateur trekker too.
For those interested in the fusion of art & culture with religion, the popular temple pilgrimage and hilltop temples provide sufficient material for the rewarding journey. Botanist can spend months studying the vast treasure - house of plants here. The birds of the Garhwal Himalaya, and their profusion, will captivate bird-watchers. And for photographers, professional or amateur, the canvas of mountain scenery and village homes will provide a wealth of material . Nor is trekking in the Garhwal hills expensive, for one can stay at any of a number of rest houses, travelers lodges or dharamshalas at a nominal cost.
Best Season
Trekking routes remain open from April to October, though the best period is considered to extend from April to June, and from mid-September to November.
Permits
Indian nationals need no permission for trekking in any area outside the inner line. For routes inside the inner line, the local District Magistrate's permission or that of the central home ministry is necessary in Advance. For foreigners, crossing the inner line is not permitted.
Treks upto 4,900m need no permission and can be undertaken on tourist visas. Above 4,900m, treks can also be undertaken with prior permission from the IMF provided no peak is attempted. Camera permits are also necessary.

Accessibility
Air : The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun. However, the flights are not vary regular.
Road : For many of the treks, Rishikesh serves as the base. Bus services connect Garhwal region  with other towns in North India.
Rail : Convenient overnight trains from Delhi connect Haridwar, the nearest rail head into Garhwal. The Shatabdi Express serves Haridwar along with trains from Mumbai and Calcutta.
