The
local peoples had always known the valley that avoided getting to
this area for fear of fairies, which they believed, would take
them, away. It was in 1931 that frank Smithe and Holdsworth
stumbled into the valley while returning from their successful
kamet expedition and were " At once transported from a
region of Solemn austerity to a fairy land of Dainty flowers, most
of them dwarf but brilliant in colors" . |
| Legends
associate this valley area with " Gandha Madan " from where
Hanuman of Ramayana collected Sanjivini herb |
|
| to revive Laxmana the younger
brother of Rama. |
|
|
| The
best time to visit the valley is during
the monsoons in July and August when
innumerable varieties of flowers bloom
and present a spectacular sight. The
valley itself is 10 km long and 2 km
wide in a conical shape, with the river
Pusphavati flowing through it.
After
one get down at Govindghat on the main
Badrinath highway, it involves a trek of
15 km to reach Ghangria wherefrom a
further short trek of 4 km leads one to
the edge of the valley. Reasonable
boarding and lodging facilities is
available at Ghangria. While returning
one may like to trek about 12 km,
westward and reach the motor road near
Hanuman Chatti through the Khunt Khal
(4572m). |
 |
|
| The
valley ranges between 3358m in altitude. There is
an adventurous route from Ghangria, a steeper
one, leads to the high- altitude Lokpal lake,
known as Hemkund (4329m) is about 4-6 hours.
Encircled by seven snow- clad peaks and their
associated glaciers, it reflects its
surroundings enchantingly on its crystal clear
serene water. |
| The
glacier from Hathi Parvat and Sapt
Shring peaks feed the lake and a small
stream called Him Ganga flows out of the
lake.IT is believed that Guru Govind
Singh, tenth guru of the sikh faith had
meditated on the bank of this lake.
There is a sikh Gurudwara and a Lakshman
temple built on the bank of this
lake.The snows floral beauties, rock
sculptures and the entire environment-
everything is divine.
